Karamana is the river flowing through the city of Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala. The river origins near the Southern tip of the Western Ghats at Agasthyaarkoodam. The river flows 66km westward and merges with the Arabian sea at Panathura near Kovalam,Kerala.
Today the condition of the river is pathetic. The Karamana river was once the pride of the city. The river doesn't flow quite and slowly anymore. The much pollution of the river has reached a state where medical officials have been forced to post the posters on the riverside and announced to the public that the water is polluted, due to careless of people. They gave warning to them to keep their children away from the bathing and swimming in the river, because it may cause rat disease (leptospirosis) and jaundice.
Studies analysing the water samples collected from 20 locationfs along the river have shown contamination from different sources resulting in poor water quality. 75% of the river water samples have been found to be acid in nature. This pollution has led to the conversion of the river into a carrier of diseases leading to environmental damage and raised the risk of the public health. Karamana river is now polluted by the public itself. It was a report from the security officers. People thrown out the wastes into the river and when the rain falls the wastes are dumped into the midst of the river. Urban growth, industrial pollution, vehicle pollution and the over use of fertilizers were increased the pathetic situation of the river. If the public think at least once in a while, our river had no such conditions arise.
This is more or less the story of all rivers in India, especially in Kerala. Rivers are considered as resources and it's our duty to protect it. It is the river which purely flows from the Himalayas. We must protect our eco system and surroundings without any bad conditions.
