Kamala Surayya(Madhavikutty)- the legend of literature

Kamamla Surayya was the famous writer in Malayalam literature. She was an asset to the world of literate works. Some of the critics said that she was the diamond from the god to us. She was a short story writer in Malayalam and a poet in English. She was born to  a family of prominent writers, so there was an inborn talent in her.

Here,I tried to narrate the short biography and her popular works....

Kamala Surayya,born on 31st March 1934 was earlier known as Madhavikutty. She was the daughter of famous Malayalam writer Balamani Amma and her father was V.M.Nair,former Managing Editor of Mathrubhumi newspaper. She was born to the Nalappat family in Trichur district,Kerala. Her uncle was the prominent writer Nalappat Narayana Menon was inspired her a lot and thus she entered into the Malayalam world. She had spend her childhood in Calcutta. She was very fluent in English as well as Malayalam. She got married at the age of 15 to Mr.Madhava Das, a bank officer. Her husband encouraged her to write and so she wrote more than earlier. She spoke out her feelings without any shy to the literature. So many people disliked her. But at last sh got a relief that she spoke out what she felt rather than hiding her personal experiences. "My Story" was her autobiography and in this book she shared all of her feelings and emotions.

She was born to a Nair family and the great devotee of Lord Krishna. She decided to converted to Islam as she was asked to do so by her lover Sadiq Ali. Then she changed her name as Kamala Surayya. She liked to wore the traditional dress of Muslims,especially 'Purdah'. Kamala Surayya had written so many short stories in Malayalam and poems in English. She published her autobiography at the age of 44. She transkated her autobiography as "My Story" and it was originally written in Malayalam as "Entev Kadha". Her famous short story was 'Neypayasam'. It was a great heart-touching story. Her other works are a motivation to others.

These are her contributions to the literature world. While reading this,we must realized that exactly she was diamond. She received lots of awards for hr great works. Ezhuthachan Award, Sahitya Academy Award, Asian Poetry Prize, Kent Award. We lost her on 31st May 2009 at the age of 75 in Pune. She was buried in Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala.But still she  living in our heart through her writings.
